Bill Meltzer: Flyers Gameday: 10/9/14 vs. NJ; Flyers-Bruins Wrapup and More

The effort was there for the Flyers, unfortunately, the execution was lacking.

Mason was real solid, outstanding really. He wasn't to blame for either Bruins goal and made quite a few tough stops.

The fourth line was very good. Rinaldo's first penalty was dumb, but he atoned with a pretty strong game.

The No Corsi For Old Men line looked good early, kind of evened out later. Lecavalier and Umberger looked more solid than Raffl, who seemed to repeat his pre-season mistake of trying to do too much with the puck.

The Couturier Line was solid for the most part, but the Giroux line got worked over. Giroux still looks rusty and Brayden Schenn didn't have a good game. He had an offensive zone turnover and lazy back check that led to the game winner.

I thought the MDZ-Schenn pair was good for most of the night, while Streit and Grossmann had some minor issues. Coburn-MacDonald seemed to struggle

They just seemed out of sync especially in the Bruins' end. They couldn't sustain zone pressure or possession and it was usually something dumb-a wayward pass or turning the wrong way-that seemed to get them in trouble. The new found emphasis on carrying the puck in was evident.

By and large it was an encouraging night, Mason really deserved a better fate, but they stumbled and lost at least a point. Hopefully it won't loom large.

Bettman is totally cool with Pronger retiring to take the job with the Dept of Player Safety

http://bigstory.ap.org/ar...r-getting-shot-safety-job

"Chris' case is unique," Bettman said. "There are salary cap reasons why he couldn't officially retire, but ... if in fact we go that route, I'm not sure that presents any problem at all to deal with. He's done playing. He gets paid no matter what from the Flyers. He doesn't owe them anything."

Missed the game but these losses that come very late in the 3rd period either through collapse, or what have you...

Seem to be kind of a theme in the last few years. Blah.

i'm not sure what to make of the article. does it mean that they'd let him retire and let the flyers off the hook?

From how I read it, it'd be (frank) the Flyers, they can still pay Pronger and carry the cap hit until 2017.

If this happens and they dont let the Flyers off the hook I think we're going to see some vintage Hextall.

i thought they were dumping it in way more compared to boston early on, but they seemed to adjust better later

del zotto was frustrating. made some terrible plays with the puck and seemed too tentative but i did like some of his plays defensively.

The context is really not played out. Your brother sees room for some sort of deal, I see that last statement and want to head over to cap geek to see who the Hell they'd have to trade to make the cap work.

Compared to Boston, yes they dumped in more. However, compared to last year, the carry ins were more noticeable.

Del Zotto had a couple plays where I went Ugh. But overall I think he and Schenn were solid.

shouldve been reviewed and disallowed for a high something and resulted in a flyers 2-man advantage IMHO

It's definitely behind paying the mortgage and getting the PP going, not sure how they'd enforce it if he retired in the middle of the season. They could pop Timonen on LTIR and knock the hit down a bit, but they'd almost certainly have to make a trade or two, and probably have to give guys or picks away to make room.

I despise the makeup of this D corps. A pair is out there and I say to myself, i can't wait for them to get off the ice. And then the next pair comes out. I know it's early and hope they get it together, but yikes. They can't drive the puck up the ice with speed and they can't really defend in the zone very well. Great mix

Papa Snider will whisper one word in Bettman's ear and make it all go away. Comcast.
